Observatory Open House

Young Harris, GA. On these special evenings, the Young Harris College Observatory is open to the public for telescopic viewing, if the skies are clear. The observatory features a 14-inch telescope and is located around 1.5 miles from campus at Twiggs Overlook on the exit road leading from Brasstown Valley Resort. Maps will be available at the planetarium. Observing sessions last up to one hour. Please note: there is limited parking, no shuttle service and no restroom facilities. Season of Light Special Holiday Presentation

Young Harris, GA. Rollins Planetarium. This perennial holiday favorite is a show about the coldest and darkest of seasons—a time that holds some of the warmest and brightest celebrations of the year. Narrated by NPR’s Noah Adams, the show explores the traditions surrounding the world’s most endearing holiday customs, all of which involve lighting up the winter season—from the burning Yule log and the lighting of luminarias to sparkling Christmas tree lights and candles in windows. The program also explores possible astronomical explanations for the star that led the Wise Men to Bethlehem. AR Georgia Blue Ridge Ultra Marathon

Blue Ridge, GA. A 50K loop trail race deep in the beautiful Chattahoochee National Forest. 16 miles of the Benton MacKaye trail, 6 miles of Hidden trails and 9 miles of Forest Service roads. Using the same trails, there is a 30K and 15K option. Tough, technical spots, single track trails, jumping over logs, creek crossings, steep ascents and steeper descents. 6th Annual Lake Chatuge Shoreline Cleanup

Hiawassee, GA. In conjunction with GA Rivers Alive! Kick off at the Towns County Swim Beach Pavilion at 9:00AM with breakfast and coffee. Volunteer coordinators will lead teams of 5-8 to designated trash sites along the shores of Lake Chatuge and we’ll meet back at the swim beach pavilion at noon for prizes and refreshments. The first 100 volunteers to sign-in will receive a free Rivers Alive t-shirt. Prizes will be awarded to volunteers who collect the most trash, find the most unique items, and uncover the hidden golden trash treasure. Prizes include a four-hour ski boat rental and equipment from Young Harris Water Sports, a two-hour pontoon boat rental from The Ridges Resort & Marina, and horseback riding passes for the Stables at Brasstown Valley.
